THE AGE OF MASS INTELLIGENCE

We’ve all heard about dumbing down. But there is plenty of evidence that the opposite is also true. Is this, in fact, the age of mass intelligence? John Parker reports...

Russell Southwood is queuing outside his local cinema in south London, listening to his iPod. Hip-hop and jazz, as usual. What is less usual is what he is queuing up for: not a film but a live transmission of this season’s opening night from the Royal Opera House. “I like hip-hop and opera,” he says. “Not a big deal.”

That’s increasingly true. Every other Saturday, Darren Henley is at the Priestfield football ground cheering on his beloved Gillingham. In the evening, he goes to a concert by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic or the London Symphony Orchestra, because he is also the boss of Classic FM, a radio station that sponsors those orchestras.

Cultural incongruities are popping up everywhere. When the Guardian, which sponsors the Hay-on-Wye literary festival, picked ten visitors to interview, one turned out to be a check-out clerk at Tesco who saved all his money during the year so he could go to the festival for his holiday. He was far from the most unlikely visitor who might have been found. High-ranking officers from the SAS (Special Air Service), Britain’s crack covert-operations regiment--who have to remain anonymous--have been known to spend their holidays each year travelling from their base at Hereford to Hay for lectures on Wordsworth and Darwin.

The sharpest of all these cultural contrasts, though, was the one taking place at the Royal Opera House itself the night Russell Southwood was queuing. Every seat had been taken not by the furs-and-cufflinks brigade but by readers of the Sun, a newspaper not noted for its opera coverage. Amid huffing and puffing from connoisseurs, 2,200 readers of Britain’s biggest-selling daily, accompanied by a trio of page-three girls (modestly attired), descended on the house of Handel and Callas for Mozart’s “Don Giovanni”. The paper celebrated with an inch-high headline: “Well Don, my Sun”.

In most rich countries, the old distinction between high and popular culture is breaking down. Isolated examples of this have been seen for a long time. In the 1960s Karlheinz Stockhausen, a doyen of avant-garde music, appeared on the cover of the Beatles’ “Sgt Pepper”. In the 1990s the Three Tenors found a mass audience for Puccini. But what used to be a characteristic of individuals or particular occasions is now becoming the defining feature of the whole culture.

Millions more people are going to museums, literary festivals and operas; millions more watch demanding television programmes or download serious-minded podcasts. Not all these activities count as mind-stretching, of course. Some are downright fluffy. But, says Donna Renney, the chief executive of the Cheltenham Festivals, audiences increasingly want “the buzz you get from working that little bit harder”. This is a dramatic yet often unrecognised development. “When people talk and write about culture,” says Ira Glass, the creator of the riveting public-radio show “This American Life”, “it’s apocalyptic. We tell ourselves that everything is in bad shape. But the opposite is true. There’s an abundance of really interesting things going on all around us.”

That may seem Pollyanna-ish. But consider these straws, all blowing in the same direction. In 1999/2000, there were 24m visits to Britain’s biggest museums. In 2007/08, the figure was 40m. Between 1999 and 2001, Britain scrapped entry charges, so the increase is partly attributable to that. Still, it was a lot of people. And another factor is the popularity of blockbuster exhibitions, such as the Terracotta Army show at the British Museum--which are seldom free, so scrapping charges cannot be the sole explanation. In most of the great cities of the West, museums now dominate the lists of most popular tourist attractions. More people go to the Louvre each year than to the Eiffel Tower; in London, three museums--the Tate, the British Museum and the National Gallery--each attract more visitors than the London Eye.

In 2006 the New York Metropolitan Opera started an experiment to reach a new audience. It began transmitting opera performances live to cinemas. In the first year it broadcast six productions to 98 movie houses in America; 325,000 people watched. The second year, it transmitted eight operas to 935,000 people. This year, there will be 11 productions, 850 cinemas in 28 countries and a forecast audience of 1.2m: roughly 100,000 people per show, compared with just 3,700 at the Met itself. A few dress up in finery. Many more stood outside in Times Square, New York, this year staring at the digital displays that usually advertise Panasonic or Disney, watching the Met’s opening-night concert.

One of the commonest complaints by cultural doomsayers is that nobody reads good books any more. Yet in the past two years, the Oprah Book Club in America recommended Tolstoy’s “Anna Karenina” and three novels by William Faulkner--good by any standard, and they all made the bestseller lists. This year, Waterstone’s, which owns over 300 bookshops in Britain, asked two celebrated novelists, Sebastian Faulks and Philip Pullman, each to choose 40 titles and write a few words of recommendation. The chain then piled copies of the books on tables next to the entrances of its main shops and waited to see what would happen. Faulks and Pullman hardly dumbed down their choices: they included Fernando Pessoa’s “Book of Disquiet”, Rudyard Kipling’s “Kim”, and Raymond Queneau’s “Exercises in Style”. The sales increases for these books over the same period the year before were, respectively, 1,350%, 1,420% and 1,800%--clear evidence of latent demand. If you offer it, they will come.

Literary festivals show the same thing. The Arts Council tries to keep track of their number: 43 in Britain in October alone. Some are tiny, like a weekend festival in Mere, a village in Wiltshire. Others are huge. Next year, the Hay Festival expects to sell 165,000 tickets for events over two weeks. When it began, in 1988, there were 2,000 visitors. Its director, Peter Florence, says the audience has grown, about 15% a year for the past 20 years. Now, he is branching out abroad, helping organise festivals in Cartagena (Colombia), Granada, Havana, Nairobi and Beirut. Not far from Hay, in Cheltenham, another literary festival has also grown, from 67,000 visitors in 2005 to over 87,000 this year. It, too, has children: the Cheltenham jazz, science and classical-music festivals have all flourished on the back of the literary one.

Of course, it may be just that there is more of everything, from serious-minded literary gabfests to drunken holidays in Benidorm. “In the past 20 or 30 years”, says Ira Glass, “there have always been little pockets in the culture where people do interesting work. But now there are so many more places, so many more people who are willing to try anything. The result is that there’s a lot of crap, but there’s also more stuff that’s good at every level.” And the internet, with its instant searches and e-mail newsletters, makes it much easier for people to know what is happening and how to get it.

Where you can make direct comparisons, the serious end of a market is holding up as well as or better than the popular one. Take television. There certainly is no shortage of chewing gum for the eyes. But a clever quiz show such as “QI”, which one might have expected to have lasted a season, is now in its sixth year on BBC2. The even more upmarket radio programme “In Our Time” was the BBC’s first podcast, in 2004, and it was an instant hit. Janice Hadlow, the new controller of BBC2, recently told the BBC staff magazine: “I want to see intelligence in popular programming. It’s good to see it cropping up in all sorts of different places--not just those programmes where you might expect it.” A series like “The Wire”, which its creator David Simon admits “requires thought and commitment to watch”, has survived poor ratings to become a critical smash. Barack Obama was one of many to call it the best show on television. The Los Angeles Times used it as an example of what “is generally acknowledged to be something of a golden era for thoughtful and entertaining dramas”.

Television, opera and perhaps museums might be said to be absorbed passively. But that is not true of literary festivals, nor of some of the new businesses taking advantage of changing public taste. In a former grocery shop in Bloomsbury, Sophie Haworth, who used to run the Tate’s education programme, has just opened the School of Life, aiming to bridge the gap between adult education and self-help. Haworth calls it “a one-stop shop for the mind”. It is more rigorous than most self-help groups and more fun than adult education. Its courses are sold out for months ahead. So are public debates for 800 people on propositions like “It’s wrong to pay for sex”, staged by Intelligence Squared. When the company started, says Jeremy O’Grady, one of its organisers, he was virtually offering free tickets to tramps on the streets to fill the hall. Now you can hardly squeeze in. “Marketing people always think the public is seduced by glitz and instant gratification,” says O’Grady. “But we’re less shallow than we think we are.”

Lastly, lest you think the School of Life and Intelligence Squared, which cater for thousands, are typical of the new cultural endeavours, consider Classic FM. Before it came along in 1992, Radio 3 had a monopoly over Britain’s supply of broadcast classical music. But (as is often the way with monopolies) it catered for insiders far better than for anyone else. As Henley says, Radio 3 “super-served the connoisseur”. You almost needed permission from the Royal College of Music to listen to it. During the day, Radio 3 strode about in a corduroy jacket; in the evening, it changed into white tie and tails. “Classical music had a language and a set of values that made it very elitist,” argues Henley. “It said: ‘This is the music. This is what you wear. These are the rules.’ But when we talked to people, they said that while they loved the music, they all thought they were the only ones put off by the way it was presented. It was like a club where the door is always locked. From day one, our aim was to blow open the locks.”

Classic FM’s launch was nothing short of sensational. Within four months, it had 4.2m listeners--twice Radio 3’s audience at that point and a vivid example of latent demand. “The audience was always there,” Henley says. “We just identified a need that wasn’t being fulfilled.”

Now, with 6m listeners a week, Classic FM is easily the largest commercial radio station in Britain (BBC Radios 1, 2 and 4 are bigger but are not commercial). One in nine of Britain’s adult population are regular listeners. They are not just the cardigan-wearing classes, either. At least 1m Classic FM listeners also tune in to Radio 1. So do about 400,000 children under 15 and, during the spring, half of all those who call the station’s musical-requests programme are students who, it seems, switch from pop, rock or dance music at exam time to something that helps them concentrate or relax. The station’s presenters embody its crossover appeal. One, Alex James, was the bass player for Blur, one of the leading Britpop bands of the 1990s; another, John Brunning, was lead guitarist for the 1970s band Mungo Jerry.

Like any good marketing operation, Classic FM divides its audience into segments. It labels them nervous discoverers, background listeners, classics as pop, popular enthusiasts and connoisseurs, and it provides programmes tailored to each. In the morning, when there are more background listeners and nervous discoverers (the youngest of the groups, also the Radio 1 listeners), the music is bright, breezy and interspersed with news and talk. In the afternoon, programmes turn more soothing for the popular enthusiasts (older, affluent, more women than men). In the evening when listeners have time, and connoisseurs tune in, you get traditional concerts.

The station goes out of its way to be user-friendly. For new or occasional listeners, it sells guidebooks (“The Friendly Guide to Classical Music”). For the enthusiasts, there is a monthly magazine. Last Christmas, it even held a “Barbie at the Symphony” concert in Liverpool’s Philharmonic hall--“The Nutcracker”, “Swan Lake”--for another target audience: doll-loving girls (and their parents).

This leaves it open to accusations of dumbing down. It is certainly true that a good deal of Classic FM’s output is undemanding; the most ferocious and rebarbative contemporary music is banned. But it plays the world’s greatest music in proper recordings. It takes the classical canon beyond the traditional audience of connoisseurs and, with its magazines and books, tries to engage new audiences more deeply with the music it plays. Darren Henley’s quest is unfinished. “I've no doubt”, he says, “that one day, everyone will listen to classical music, maybe not all the time, but at different stages of their lives. It offers people a spirituality, an otherworldliness that they want. We hear that from our listeners all the time.”

Philippe de Montebello, soon to step down after 31 years as director of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, is fond of saying “the public is a lot smarter than anyone gives it credit for.” He seems to be right. But why? It’s unlikely people are more intelligent than they used to be. Perhaps the elites that enjoy high culture are now bigger for some reason? Perhaps popular tastes have changed in such a way as to benefit high culture? Or perhaps it has nothing to do with changes in the audience, and more to do with the artists and institutions, who have become more skilled at attracting people? Answer: all of the above.

Hard though it may be for professional pessimists to credit, educational standards have risen appreciably over the past 40 years. A good way to measure this is to look at how many people have degrees in each generation. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Paris has worked this out and found that 29% of Britons between the ages of 25 and 34 have what it calls “type-A tertiary education” (basically, universities). But the share is little more than half that in an older generation (16% of those between 55 and 64). This reflects the expansion of universities in Britain since the 1960s. And in case you suspect the effect is merely a result of relabelling polytechnics as universities, the OECD has allowed for that, too. It calls the polytechnics “type-B tertiary education” (ie, vocational and higher training). Type B education in Britain has been flat. The growth has come from universities alone. In a literal sense, there has been an expansion of mass intelligence: more people have been trained at universities to want, or expect, more intellectual stimulation.

People with degrees are much more likely to go to museums than anyone else. Two researchers from Oxford University, Tak Wing Chan and John Goldthorpe, studied the influence of income, occupation, social class and education on whether people go to theatre, dance, cinema, music and the visual arts. They concluded that education is by far the most important factor. “The higher individuals’ education level,” they write, “the higher, one might say, is their capacity for cultural consumption.” They also looked at whether people tended to concentrate on one thing (going to the movies, say) or to engage with lots of art forms. They found that university graduates were far more likely to be “cultural omnivores” than “cultural univores”. Others have found the same thing. In 2007 the American research group MRI looked at the viewing and reading habits of the elite market, which it defined as those who went to, or subscribed to, at least two of the following: the New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, The Economist, HBO, theatre, art galleries or classical concerts. They found that of this group, a third also read Peoplemagazine, watched “American Idol” and subscribed to the cable sports channel ESPN. One of the features of the market for mass intelligence is its heterogeneity.

There is a second, indirect link between education and culture, albeit one that is hard to pin down. Over the past two decades, education has been increasingly rewarded; in the “knowledge economy”, university graduates have done much better than others and the value of a degree has soared. People with degrees also go to cultural events more often so, though there is no necessary connection, there is a correlation: education, culture and income or status tend to go together. A study by the Pew Research Centre in America last year measured this correlation by proxy. It found that 60% of people with incomes of less than $20,000 a year said they had a low knowledge of current affairs; 15% had a high knowledge. For those on incomes of $100,000 and over, the shares were almost exactly reversed: nearly 60% high, less than 20% low. Keeping abreast of current affairs is obviously different from going to the opera or science festivals. Indeed, going to an arts event is often an escape from work. But it is also a way to gain status, to network and to use and burnish the thing that helps you at the office: knowledge.

An alternative explanation for the growth of mass intelligence comes from Peter Florence of the Hay Festival. Forty or 50 years ago, he argues, the public appetite for debate and intellectual curiosity was partly met by politics. The 1960s was a period of political ferment. Later, the current of public interest ran through television and radio; the BBC and ITV played a huge role in bringing theatre, opera and the rest of it to a wider audience. The tradition of public service, he thinks, “nourished an appetite for culture that has survived the splintering of monolithic public-service broadcasters and been encouraged by the rise of the internet”.

No doubt these long-run trends have played a role. But if they were the sole explanation, you would expect the market for mass intelligence to have developed slowly, imperceptibly. And one of its striking features is how rapidly it can appear--as Classic FM, Waterstone’s and the Met have all shown. The behaviour of arts providers makes a big difference too. Most successful arts organisations are busy blowing away a certain dustiness and injecting a sense of fun and style. Adult education and debating societies used to mean draughty halls and comfortless benches. The School of Life, in contrast, looks like a designer shop and the Intelligence Squared debates take place, says O’Grady, “in the most comfortable leather seats northern Italy has to offer”. This year’s Christmas programme at London’s Southbank Centre includes a Quentin Crisp lookalike contest and a concert by an orchestra using instruments scavenged from rubbish--drainpipes, traffic cones, discarded soy-sauce bottles.

When arts organisations do this, they can not only expand their audience but sometimes create new ones in the most unexpected ways. This is what Naxos Audio Books has done with recordings of classic books on CD and tape. Its bestsellers include abridged versions of Milton’s “Paradise Lost” (three CDs) and a four-CD account of James Joyce’s “Ulysses”. Amazingly, Naxos sells thousands of copies of an unabridged version of “Ulysses” (22 CDs). “When I first proposed it, my colleagues thought I was mad,” says the company’s founder, Nicolas Soames. “At the start, it was just a hunch. I thought that if we read writers like Dante or Milton aloud, it would make them live again for a new audience.”

What was most remarkable was the origin of that audience. “I was a judo journalist,” Soames says, “and when I visited judo groups I found that everyone wanted to learn. The -do in judo means ‘the way’ and the concept inculcates in those doing the sport a strong desire to learn. These people would never sit down and read Dante or Joyce. But they would listen to them if they were read well enough. Now we know there is a group of people I call self-improvers who want a wide range of intelligent stuff, including the classics.”

From opera in cinemas to audio books for judo-players: the expanding market for intelligence is certainly unexpected. But what does it really amount to? Is it a profound cultural change or a mild shift upmarket? Here are three tentative conclusions. First, the growth of a market for intelligence may not imply anything about the quality of art being produced. Artists and patrons do separate, if related, things. Accusations of dumbing down are legion. On the other hand, the LA Times’s view that this is a golden age for serious television might be applied more widely. It is hard to believe that those who accuse arts institutions of dumbing down would want audiences to be smaller.

Second, the growth of intelligent interest may help resolve an argument that exists in universities between those who say culture is really all about class or income, much as it always was, and those who say that, no, sweeping statements about class are no longer relevant, and that these days personal taste, not class or money, is what matters. The new audience suggests both schools are partly right (or wrong). Taste has become fantastically heterogeneous: people do indeed watch and read whatever they want; intellectual snobbery is breaking down. But as Drs Wing and Goldthorpe have shown, one group--those with university degrees--read more, watch more and mix and match more than anyone else.

Third, what does all this say about the widespread view that societies are dumbing down, educational standards are crumbling and people’s ability to concentrate is collapsing? The reply must be that it cannot be true across the board and that for a significant number, the opposite is the case: people want more intellectually demanding things to see and hear, not fewer. Surely both things are happening at once: part of the population is dumbing down, part is wising up. But something has changed. H.L. Mencken, the so-called sage of Baltimore, said: “No one in this world...has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people.” A growing number of people are proving him wrong.

Abstract

Geistes- und Naturwissenschaften werden üblicherweise anhand ihrer Gegenstände und/oder ihrer Methoden voneinander abgegrenzt. Einige Modelle behaupten eine Konvergenz beider Diskursformen, z. B. unter dem Kriterium „Ästhetizität“. Außerdem werden normative Aussagen darüber getroffen, wie sich Geisteswissenschaften (GW) und Naturwissenschaften (NW) zueinander verhalten sollen. Demgegenüber schlagen wir vor, die beiden Diskursformen in Anlehnung an ein Konzept Luhmanns über verschiedenartige „Beobachtungsperspektiven“ voneinander abzugrenzen: GW perspektivieren alle Beobachtungen auf erkenntnistheoretische Fragestellungen hin. NW verzichten auf diese Perspektivierung. Dieser Ansatz erlaubt es, das Verhältnis von NW und GW neu zu konstruieren, und zwar in Übereinstimmung mit empirischen Befunden zur Wissenschaftspraxis.

1. Gängige Modelle zum Verhältnis von Geistes- und Naturwissenschaften

Jedes Modell zum Verhältnis von GW und NW setzt eine vorgängige Unterscheidung zwischen diesen Begriffen voraus. Für welchen Zeitpunkt ein solche Unterscheidung nachzuweisen ist, bleibt umstritten. Meist wird das 19. Jahrhundert genannt, zuweilen die Renaissance, manche Autoren plädieren für einen noch früheren Zeitpunkt.ⁱ Dabei werden verschiedene Unter scheidungs merkmale in Anspruch genommen: die Einteilung der möglichen Gegenstände des Wissens in Artefakte und Naturgegenstände,ⁱⁱ die Erfindung der Begriffe „Geistes“- bzw. „Naturwissenschaft“ⁱⁱⁱ oder die akademische Institutionalisierung zweier unterschiedlicher Formen des Wissens im 19. Jahrhundert.^iv

Geistes- und Naturwissenschaften sind verschieden

Die maßgeblichen wissenschaftstheoretischen Entwürfe des späten 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts grenzen GW und NW anhand ihrer Gegenstände und/oder ihrer Methoden ab. Das gilt zum Beispiel für Dilthey:^v Als GW firmieren alle “Wissenschaften des handelnden Menschen”. Das schließt neben den Philologien und der Geschichtsschreibung auch die Sozialwissenschaften ein. Aus der Beschaffenheit der Gegenstände geisteswissenschaftlicher Forschung wird die hermeneutische Methode des „Verstehens“ abgeleitet. Sie fungiert als methodisches Unter scheidungsmerkmal: “Nur was der Geist geschaffen hat, versteht er.” Die Naturwissenschaften werden methodisch durch das „Erklären“ gekennzeichnet.^vi

Ein methodisches „Abgrenzungskriterium“ findet sich auch im Frühwerk Poppers. Hier werden Aussagen der „empirischen Wissenschaft“ anhand ihrer „Falsifizierbarkeit“ von „meta-physischen“ Aussagen unterschieden. Es liegt nahe, die „empirische Wissenschaft“ mit den NW gleichzusetzen. Demgemäß kündigt der Untertitel der ersten Auflage der Logik der Forschung (1934) eine „Erkenntnistheorie der modernen Naturwissenschaft“ an.^vii GW sind als Spezialfall von Metaphysik einzuordnen.

Das Abgrenzungskriterium präjudiziert die weitere Ausarbeitung der Modelle. So kann es nicht überraschen, dass Dilthey und Popper im Detail zu verschiedenen Festlegungen gelangen. Doch in einem sind beide sich einig: Geistes- und Naturwissenschaften sind grundverschieden.

1.2 Geistes- und Naturwissenschaften gleichen einander

In der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts wird zunehmend eine Konvergenz beider Diskurs formen behauptet. In diesem Zusammenhang sind Kuhn, Feyerabend, Rorty und auch der ‘späte’ Popper zu nennen.

Kuhns The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962) setzt sich von Poppers „Kritischem Rationalismus“ in einer entscheidenden Hinsicht ab: Methodische Standards können in den NW nie dauerhafte Verbindlichkeit beanspruchen. Sie werden vom gerade vorherrschenden „Paradigma“ definiert.^{^viii} Eine endgültige Falsifizierung von Theorien ist folglich nicht möglich.

Feyerabend radikalisiert diesen Ansatz: Methodische Standards spielen in der Wissen schaftspraxis eine weitaus geringere Rolle als gemeinhin angenommen wird.^ix Mehr noch: Sie sollten gänzlich aufgegeben werden. Die wissenschaftliche Kreativität kann davon nur profi tieren. Against Method (1975) plädiert für eine „anarchistische“ Erkenntnistheorie:

“Science is an essentially anarchistic enterprise: theoretical anarchism is more humanitarian and more likely to encourage progress that its law-and-order alternatives.” (S.17)

Darum gilt: „Anything goes“.^{^x} Ein methodisches Abgrenzungskriterium für NW und GW kann nicht angegeben werden, und eine Abgrenzung hinsichtlich der Gegenstände wird nicht in Erwägung gezogen. NW und GW sind von gleicher Art.^xi

Rorty versucht in Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature (1979), diese ‘Konvergenzthese’ erkenntnistheoretisch zu stützen. Der Begriff „Wahrheit“ soll nicht mehr verwendet werden. AlleBeschreibungen – ob von Wissenschaftern, Dichtern oder Mystikern – haben denselben Status. Sie sind Fiktionen:

“The utility of the “existentialist” view is that, by proclaiming that we have no essence, it permits us to see the descriptions of ourselves we find in one of (or in the unity of) the Naturwissenschaften as on a par with the various alternative descriptions offered by poets, novelists, depth psychologists, sculptors, anthropologists, and mystics. The former are not privileged representations in virtue of the fact that (at the moment) there is more consensus in the sciences than in the arts. They are simply among the repertoire of self–descriptions at our disposal” (Rorty 1979, S.362).

Auch im Spätwerk Poppers werden GW und NW der Dichtung angenähert. Literatur wird zum genus proximum beider Diskursformen:^xii

“Schließlich ist die Wissenschaft ein Teil der Literatur; und wissenschaftliche Arbeit ist eine menschliche Tätigkeit wie das Bauen eines Domes. Sicher gibt es in der heutigen Wissenschaft zu viel Spezialisierung und Professionalismus, wodurch sie unmenschlich wird; doch das gilt leider von der heutigen Geschichtswissenschaft oder Psychologie fast im gleichen Maße wie für die Naturwissenschaften. [...] Es ist lange Mode gewesen und nachgerade langweilig geworden, auf dem Unterschied zwischen Geistes- und Naturwissenschaften herumzureiten” (Popper 1973, S.206).

Feyerabend arbeitet diesen Gedanken in Wissenschaft als Kunst (1984) weiter aus. Im Anschluss an Vorschläge Riegls zum Stilwechsel in den Künsten wird die Entwicklung der NW als eine Abfolge von Denkstilen vorgestellt.^{^xiii}

Auch Ergebnisse der Quantenphysik werden bemüht, wenn es gilt, die Differenz von GW, NW und Dichtung auf dem Niveau ‘schwacher' Erkenntnisansprüche zu nivellieren:

Literature has felt authorized to make such a jump [gemeint ist die Rezeption naturwissenschaftlicher Theorien] also due to the discovery of various principles of indeterminacy in science, which led to the awareness of a common ground of uncertainty linking the two branches'' (Carpi 2004, S. 49, Hervorhebung d.V.)

Das hebt auf Heisenbergs „Unschärferelation“ ab.^xiv Diese zeigt aber keinen „common ground of uncertainty“ an.

Die „Unschärferelation“ ergibt sich aus der Schrödinger-Gleichung, der Grundgleichung der Quantenmechanik. Diese ermöglicht Vorhersagen über das experimentell zu beobachtende Verhalten von Systemen im Mikrokosmos. So lässt sich die Verteilung z. B. des Impulses und des Orts eines quantenmechanischen Objekts in einem gegebenen System exakt bestimmen. Verteilungen sinddeterminiert.

Die „Unschärferelation“ zeigt lediglich, dass Objekte im Mikrokosmos anders als im Makrokosmos beschaffen sind.^xv Die englische Übersetzung „uncertainty principle'' ist irreführend, und die Rede vom „common ground of uncertainty'' beruht auf Missverständ nissen. Die Quantenphysik ist ungeeignet, die These von der Konvergenz von GW und NW zu legitimieren.

1.3 Sind die GW den NW überlegen? Oder verhält es sich umgekehrt?

Die Diskussion über das Verhältnis von GW und NW nimmt, wenn sie auf deren Verschiedenheit abhebt, häufig polemische Züge an. Das ist auf explizite oder implizite Wertungen zurückzuführen, die eine Überlegenheit der einen oder der anderen Diskursform behaupten. Erstmals wurde eine solche Auseinandersetzung in den 1880er Jahren zwischen Matthew Arnold und Thomas Henry Huxley ausgetragen. Hauptstreitpunkt ist die Frage, ob das Studium der Literatur oder die NW im Mittelpunkt des Unterrichts an den Schulen stehen sollen. Arnold plädiert unter Berufung auf ein humanistisches Bildungsideal für den Vorrang der GW:

“If then there is to be separation and option between humane letters on the one hand, and the natural sciences on the other, the great majority of mankind, all who have not exceptional and overpowering aptitudes for the study of nature, would do well, I cannot but think, to chose to be educated in humane letters rather than in the natural sciences. Letters will call out their being at more points, will make them live more” (Arnold 2000, 1556).

Huxley hält diese Einschätzung für falsch:

“For the purpose of attaining real culture, an exclusively scientific education is at least as effectual as an exclusively literary education” (Huxley 2000, 1561).

Außerdem meint er, in der industrialisierten Welt sei eine naturwissenschaftliche Ausbildung geradezu überlebenswichtig.

Mitte des 20. Jahrhundert wird diese Auseinandersetzung von C.P. Snow und F.R. Leavis weitergeführt.^xviSnow kritisiert in Übereinstimmung mit Huxley jene Autoren, die allein das Studium der Literatur als Quelle von ‘Bildung’ anerkennen. Er verwahrt sich zwar gegen den Vorwurf, The Two Cultures (1959) nehme eine Wertung vor. Dass „scientific culture“ in einem günstigeren Licht erscheint als „literary culture“, ist aber unübersehbar.^xvii Daran entzündet sich Leavis Kritik.

Solche Diskussionen sind von zweifelhaftem Wert: Sie leben von Übertreibungen und polemischer Einseitigkeit. Oft werden Theorie und Praxis mindestens einer der beiden Diskursformen falsch eingeschätzt. Auch ist die Wertung meist schon im Abgrenzungskriterium impliziert, ohne dass dieser Zusammenhang offengelegt würde. Trotzdem haben ‘feuilletonistische’ Diskurse mehr Einfluss auf die Allokation von Fördermitteln als vergleichsweise nüchterne wissenschaftstheoretische Arbeiten. Darum sind sie, trotz aller Vorbehalte, der Aufmerksamkeit wert.

1.4 Wie sollen sich GW und NW zueinander verhalten?

Thesen zum Verhältnis von GW und NW haben oftmals auch normativen Charakter: Sie sprechen Empfehlungen darüber aus, wie deren Repräsentanten miteinander umgehen sollen. So wird ihnen nahe gelegt, sich ‘kooperativ’ oder ‘kompetitiv’ zu verhalten oder die Einseitig keiten der jeweils anderen Diskursform zu ‘kompensieren’. Nur selten wird ‚splendid isolation’ empfohlen.^xviii

Viele Autoren meinen, der „Graben“ zwischen GW und NW müsse geschlossen werden.^xix So plädieren sie für ein ‘kooperatives’ Verhältnis: Snow konstatiert in The Two Cultures einen status quo wechselseitiger Ignoranz und wirbt – vor allem aus politischen und ökonomischen Gründen – für Zusammenarbeit. Edward O. Wilson geht noch weiter: Ziel solcher Kooperation ist die „Einheit des Wissens“ („consilience“).

“Die Grundidee bei der Vorstellung von einer natürlichen Einheit allen Wissens ist, daß alle greifbaren Phänomene, von der Sternengeburt bis hin zu den Funktionsweisen von gesellschaftlichen Institutionen, auf materiellen Prozessen basieren, die letzten Endes auf physikalische Gesetze reduzierbar sind, ganz egal wie lang oder umständlich ihre Sequenzen sind. [...] Doch der wesentliche Punkt neben der Vorstellung von einer natürlichen Einheit allen Wissens ist, daß Kultur, und daher auch die einzigartigen Merkmale der Spezies Mensch, nur dann einen wirklichen Sinn ergibt, wenn sie in einen Kausalzusammenhang mit den Naturwissenschaften gestellt wird. Und dafür bietet sich die Biologie als nächstliegende und relevanteste aller wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen an” (Wilson 1998, S.355).

Nach Wilson wird die „Einheit des Wissens“ durch die Anwendung naturwissenschaftlicher Methoden in allenForschungsbereichen erreicht. Darum sind Wilsons Vorschläge für viele Geisteswissenschaftler inakzeptabel. Im zweiten Teil dieses Aufsatzes soll begründet werden, warum das Unbehagen gegenüber forcierter ‘Interdisziplinarität’ durchaus gerecht fertigt ist.

Die Idee eines ‘kompensatorischen’ Verhältnisses zwischen GW und NW spielt bereits in der Arnold–Huxley Debatte eine wichtige Rolle. Zuletzt wurde sie vor allem von Odo Marquard vertreten: “Je moderner die moderne Welt wird, desto unvermeidlicher werden die Geisteswissenschaften.” (Marquard 1986, S.98f.) Die Geisteswissenschaften erzählen „Sensibili sierungsgeschichten“, „Bewahrungsgeschichten“ und „Orientierungsgeschichten“. Damit kompensieren sie „Modernisierungsschäden“, die vom naturwissenschaftlichen und technischen Fortschritt herrühren.^xx

Ein ‘kompetitives’ Verhältnis von GW und NW wird vor allem von politischen Entscheidungsträgern gefordert. Hier geht es um Allokationsfragen.^xxi Die Präferenz von Politik und Sponsoren für ‘Interdisziplinäres’ kann auch erklären, weshalb die Idee einer ‘splendid isolation’ kaum jemals vertreten wird. Ausnahmen gibt es dennoch. So schreibt Melvin Lasky, Mitherausgeber von Encounter, dem publizistischen Forum der Snow-Leavis-Debatte:

„Ich glaube, es gab immer zwei Kulturen, und wird sie auch immer geben. Und wenn wir es für noch so unerwünscht halten, wird sich daran auch in Zukunft nichts ändern...” (Gingerich 1975, S.484).

Lasky hat Recht. Warum?

2. Ein neues Modell zum Verhältnis von Geistes- und Naturwissenschaften

Die folgenden Überlegungen zielen auf die Differenz von GW und NW. Als Abgrenzungskriterium fungiert deren ‘Reflexionsebene’ oder ‘Erkenntnisinteresse’. Mit Blick auf Gegenstände und Methoden werden keinerlei Festlegungen getroffen. Das ist in zweierlei Hinsicht von Vorteil: Zum einen greifen NW längst auch auf Gegenstände zu, die traditionell die Domäne der GW bilden. Umgekehrt äußern sich Geisteswissenschaftler zu naturwissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen. Das wird für diejenigen Modelle zum Problem, die den Gegenstandsbereich zum Abgrenzungskriterium von GW und NW erheben. Zum andern müssen Modelle mit einem methodischen Abgrenzungskriterium die unbestreitbare „Anarchie“ der Methoden durch normative Setzungen eskamotieren oder vorschnell auf die Ununterscheidbarkeit beider Diskursformen schließen. Darüber hinaus kann das hier offerierte Modell erklären, warum es bis heute – trotz aller Deklarationen über die „Einheit der Wissenschaft“ – „zwei Kulturen“ gibt: GW und NW verfolgen jenseits aller vermeintlichen methodischen Differenzen grundverschiedene ‘Erkenntnisinteressen’. Die Repräsentanten der beiden „Kulturen“ haben einander in der Tat nichts zu sagen, und dieser Umstand ist nicht beklagenswert.

2.1 Zum Begriff „Beobachten“

Um die allzu vage Rede von ‘Reflexionsebenen’ oder ‘Erkenntnisinteressen’ genauer zu fassen, führen wir einen Begriff aus der Systemtheorie ein: „Beobachten“, die Einheit von „Unterscheiden“ und „Bezeichnen“.^xxii Dieser Begriff enthält keine Vorentscheidung zugunsten des epistemischen Realismus oder des Konstruktvismus: Zwar werden Unter scheidungen – folgt man Luhmann – in einen „unmarked state“ eingezeichnet, und demgemäß kann kein Beobachtetes der Beobachtung präexistieren. Eine realistische Deutung ist aber möglich: Ob Wirklichkeit unabhängig von Beobachtung ein „unmarked state“ ist, kann kein Beobachter entscheiden. Die These, Unterscheidungen gäben präexistierende Unter scheidungen in einer „Welt-an-sich“ wieder, kann nicht widerlegt werden.^xxiii Das klingt zwar ver stiegen, doch epistemischen Realismus glaubwürdig zu begründen, war immer schon schwierig.^xxiv Trotzdem ist die Vorstellung, jene Wirklichkeit ‘vor der Beobachtung’ sei der ‘Erkenntnis’ zugänglich, bis heute verbreitet, und zwar auch unter Philosophen: Voraus setzungsreiche Argumente können überzeugen, sofern ihre conclusio plausibel erscheint. Für die realistische Deutung von „Beobachten" gilt das umso mehr, als sie der umgangs sprachlichen Bedeutung des Wortes entspricht. So können beide Lager: epistemische Realisten wie Konstruktivisten auf diesen Begriff zugreifen. Er ist erkenntnistheoretisch indifferent. Das ist deswegen wichtig, weil die Behauptung, NW seien durch eben diese Indifferenz ge kenn zeichnet, im Weiteren von einiger Bedeutung sein wird.

Vorab ist zu begründen, warum ein einzelner Begriff aus dem Vokabular Luhmanns herausgelöst wird: Dass die „Wissenschaft der Gesellschaft“ (1992) im Fach „Wissen schaftstheorie“ recht zögerlich rezipiert wird, mag man kontingenten Umständen wie der traditionell eher geringen Kooperationsbereitschaft der Soziologie gegenüber zurechnen, auch Luhmanns hermetischer Schreibweise und teilweise extravaganten Interpretationen klassischer Probleme der NW. In unserem Zusammenhang ist Luhmanns Entwurf nur von begrenztem Interesse: Wissenschaft wird als Einheit vorgestellt. Das Verhältnis von GW und NW bleibt unberücksichtigt. Darüber hinaus sind Luhmanns Ausführungen in mancher Hinsicht recht anfechtbar: So werden Theorien im System Wissenschaft anhand der Unterscheidung „wahr vs. unwahr“ evaluiert. Doch in der naturwissenschaftlichen Sprache kommt diese Unter scheidung nicht vor: „Wahrheit“ wird dem Vokabular der Metaphysik zugerechnet. Für die GW gilt das umso mehr: Die Hochkonjuktur von konstruktivistischen und de-konstruktivistischen Theorien hat „Wahrheit“ aus dem begrifflichen Inventar der GW eliminiert. Für Luhmanns Vorschlag, „wahr vs. unwahr“ als Leitunterscheidung des Systems Wissenschaft anzusehen, fehlen demnach die empirischen Anhaltspunkte.^xxv

Auch die Entscheidung, jedem System genau eine operative Leitunterscheidung zuzuweisen, ist anfechtbar. Zwar garantiert das Übersicht, Ökonomie, Eleganz. Aber entspricht es der Praxis der Wissenschaft? Tatsächlich werden stets mehrere Unterscheidungen zur Evaluierung von Theorien eingesetzt, z. B. „ökonomisch vs. unökonomisch“, „konsistent vs. inkonsistent“, „heuristisch ergiebig vs. nicht ergiebig“, „anschlussfähig (gegenüber voran gehenden und nachfolgenden Beobachtungen) vs. nicht anschlussfähig“.^xxvi Ist es erforderlich, ist es vertretbar, diese Unterscheidungen einer einzelnen Leitunterscheidung zu subsumieren? Wenn ja, dann scheint die Unterschiedung „gerechtfertigt vs. nicht gerecht fertigt“ den Inten tionen der Forscher besser zu entsprechen als „wahr vs. unwahr“.

Eine weitere Besonderheit der Systemtheorie liegt in der rigiden wechselseitigen Abgrenzung der Systeme. Auch das ist elegant. Doch ist es sachgerecht? Im Spätwerk Poppers wird Wissenschaft als Spezialfall von Kunst dargestellt, und selbst wer Popper nicht folgen mag, muss zugestehen, dass ästhetische Merkmale bei der Konstruktion und Evaluierung geistes- und naturwissenschaftlicher Theorien eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Die Systemtheorie selbst ist ein Beispiel dafür.^xxvii

Kurz: Dass Luhmann „selektiv“ rezipiert wird, rechtfertigt sich erstens aus immanenten Problemen seiner Theorie und zweitens aus einer veränderten Blickrichtung: Nicht die „Außengrenze“ von Wissenschaft wird fokussiert, sondern die „Binnengrenze“ zwischen GW und NW.

2.2 Geistes- und Naturwissenschaften: verschiedenartige Beobachtungsperspektiven

Kein Modell zum Verhältnis von GW und NW wird auf alle Disziplinen gleichermaßen gut anwendbar sein. Die folgenden Vorschläge wollen in erster Linie an Literaturwissenschaft und Physik gemessen werden. Diese Präferenz ist keineswegs idiosynkratisch. Literatur wissen schaft und Physik wurden von jeher als Prototypen von GW und NW angesehen: Kuhns Arbeiten zur Geschichte der NW beziehen sich meist auf physikalische Probleme. Rorty behandelt „literary criticism“ als Muster geisteswissenschaftlicher Praxis. Dagegen bleiben Sozialwissenschaften und Psychologie ambivalent. Ihrem Selbstverständnis nach changieren sie zwischen GW und NW. Sie sind als Prototypen ungeeignet.

NW beobachten. Im Modus der Beobachtung zweiter Ordnung beobachten sie das Unbeobachtete der Beobachtung erster Ordnung. Die Beobachtbarkeit des Beobachteten und die Unbeobachtbarkeit des Unbeobachteten bleiben unbeobachtet. Sie werden im Diskurs der NW nicht thematisch. Naturwissenschaftler stellen zwar die methodologische Frage, wie der Bereich des Beobachteten sich verschieben oder erweitern lässt. Aber erkenntnistheoretische Fragen werden ausgeklammert (z. B. „Was heißt es zu sagen, etwas werde beobachtet?“ oder „Gibt es Unbeobachtetes, das sich jeder Beobachtung entzieht?“). Das ist kein Ausdruck von Naivität, sondern die Eigenart der naturwissenschaftlichen Beobachtungsperspektive.^xxviii

GW beobachten. Im Modus der Beobachtung zweiter Ordnung beobachten sie das Unbeobachtete der Beobachtung erster Ordnung. Hierin gleichen sie den NW.^xxix Anders als NW thematisieren GW auch Beobachtbarkeit und Unbeobachtbarkeit. Tatsächlich perspek tivieren sie alle Beobachtungen auf die Frage nach der Beobachtbarkeit des Beobachteten und der Unbeobachtbarkeit des Unbeobachteten. Sie wird zumeist in den Vokabularen von Systemtheorie, Dekonstruktion, Psychoanalyse, Semiotik und Hermeneutik artikuliert. Deswegen wenden Philologen der „alten Schule“ gegen die neuere, erkenntnistheoretisch informierte Literaturwissenschaft ein, literarische Texte würden nur mehr als Vorwand für theoretische Glasperlenspiele missbraucht. Das Verhältnis von Mittel und Zweck werde verkehrt. Die Repräsentanten der neueren Literaturwissenschaft entgegnen, was an einem Text beobachtet werde (oder unbeobachtet bleibe), sei nur zu begreifen, wenn seine Beobacht bar keit oder Unbeobachtbarkeit thematisiert werde. „Reine“, „textimmanente“ Philologie bleibe „unterkomplex“. Häufig wird dieses Argument weiter zugespitzt: Es sei der Text selbst, der (Un-) Beobachtbarkeit „performiere“, und darum sei er ein Kunstwerk.^xxx Die scheinbar weit ausgreifende „Spekulation“ sei vielmehr der Musterfall redlicher Philologie. ^xxxi

Die Verschiedenheit der geistes- und der naturwissenschaftlichen Beobachtungs perspektive tritt besonders deutlich hervor, wenn NW auf Gegenstände zugreifen, die herkömmlich den GW zugeordnet werden: Neurophysiologische Analysen der Wirkung lyrischer Texte und Arbeiten über die evolutionäre Genese und Funktion von Literatur (Biopoetics) klammern die Frage nach der (Un-) Beobachtbarkeit ihres Gegenstands konsequent aus. Für geisteswissenschaftliche Analysen ist dies die leitende Fragestellung.^xxxii Umgekehrt gilt, dass Geisteswissenschaftler, wenn sie auf „naturwissenschaftliche“ Gegen stände zugreifen, recht besehen nicht diese selbst beobachten, sondern deren (Un-) Beobacht barkeit. Die Beobachtungsperspektive verschiebt sich vom Gegenstand auf das Verhältnis des Gegenstandes zur Beobachtung. Geisteswissenschaftler überspringen gleichsam die physi kalische Ebene der Beobachtung, um sich unvermittelt erkenntnistheoretischen Problemen zu zu wenden. Daraus entstehen zuweilen Probleme.^xxxiii

Dieses Modell hat mindestens eine contraintuitive Konsequenz: Die Philologen der „alten Schule“ müssen als Naturwissenschaftler eingeordnet werden. Das ist bei näherer Betrachtung aber nicht abwegig: Als Muster solcher „textimmanenten“ Philologie kann der „New Criticism“ gelten. Er geht aus ‚Experimenten’ I.A. Richards hervor und steht den NW auch unter methodischen Gesichtspunkten nahe.^xxxiv

2.3 Ist Interdisziplinarität wünschenswert?

Weil die Beobachtungspektiven von NW und GW grundsätzlich verschieden sind, gibt es kein gehaltvolles Kriterium der Wertung, das auf beide Bereiche angewandt werden könnte: NW sind daran zu messen, wie sie Beobachtetes und Unbeobachtetes beobachten. GW sind daran zu messen, wie sie Beobachtbarkeit und Unbeobachtbarkeit beobachten. So kann keiner der beiden Bereiche einen Vorrang beanspruchen. Die eine oder die andere Diskursform für überlegen zu erklären, ist müßig. Dabei steht es den GW durchaus zu, die NW darüber zu belehren, was sie „eigentlich“ tun; welche Voraussetzungen ihrer Arbeit „reflektiert“ werden müssten. NW dürfen solcherlei Reflexionen aber getrost ignorieren: Sie bleiben ihrem Tun äußerlich.^xxxvForderungen nach mehr Kooperation oder Wettbewerb sind müßig, denn dafür sind GW und NW zu verschieden. Zu fordern, die Geistes- sollten an den Naturwissenschaften Maß nehmen und „gesellschaftsrelevantes“ „Wissen“ erzeugen – etwa im Sinne einer „Sozialtechnologie“ oder weltanschaulichen „Orientierungswissens“ –, ist vollends verfehlt: Das können sie nicht. Eine Gesellschaft, der Reflexion nichts gilt, hat GW schlichtweg nicht nötig. Auch die „Einheit des Wissens“ ist eine Chimäre: Zwar wird sie lautstark eingeklagt – doch dabei bleibt es. Nach allem, was hier gesagt wurde, kann das nicht überraschen: NW können auf „geisteswissenschaftliche“ Gegenstände und Methoden zugreifen (und umgekehrt) – in diesem Sinne ist „Interdisziplinarität“ möglich^xxxvi –, eine Verschmelzung der beiden charakteristischen Beobachtungsperspektiven ist aber unmöglich und nicht einmal wünschenswert.

Eine Gemeinsamkeit der beiden Diskursformen ist aber festzuhalten. Sie verbindet GW und NW mit Kunst und Religion.

3. Schluss

Von Geistes- wie Naturwissenschaftlern sind Äußerungen überliefert, die von „Transzedenzer fahrungen“ berichten.^xxxvii Im ersten Fall sind diese Erfahrungen mit ästhetischer Erfahrung verbunden. Im zweiten Fall mit der Anschauung einer als „schön“ oder „erhaben“ erlebten Natur:

„The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science” (Einstein 2005).

In solchen Aussagen manifestiert sich eine gewisse Unbefangenheit im Umgang mit manchen religiös oder metaphysisch konnotierten Begriffen. Für Naturwissenschaftler ist sie durchaus charakteristisch, schließlich sind sie nicht professionell mit Unbeobachtbarem befasst. Ihnen fehlen die ‘nach-kantischen’ erkenntnistheoretischen Skrupel, mit den Geisteswissenschaftler sich tagtäglich plagen. So können sie wie selbstverständlich auf Begriffe zurückgreifen, die unter Geisteswissenschaftlern längst „dekonstruiert“ sind. Ob deren abgeklärte, skeptische Haltung vorzuziehen ist, sei dahingestellt. Denn „Transzendenzerfahrungen“ oder „Präsenz effekte“ (Gumbrecht) bleiben, was immer die offiziellen Selbstauskünfte darüber sagen mögen, der wichtigste Ansporn wissenschaftlicher wie künstlerischer Betätigung:

“There are similar satisfactions experienced by the scientist and artist in the creative process. As Arthur Koestler points out in The Act of Creation, the marvelous clarity that enraptures a scientist when he oder she discovers a law is shared by a poet when the words of a poem fall into a pattern that seems to fit exactly – or when a felicitous image unfolds in the mind of the artist to express the unexpressible. He views the sense of oceanic wonder as the emotive aspect of both art and science. It is the most sublime expression of self-transcending emotion – an emotion that is the root of the scientist’s quest for ultimate causes and the artist’s quest for the ultimate realities of experience” (Friedman 1999, S. 10).^{^xxxviii}

Leistete ein Gott einen Meineid auf dieses Wasser, verfiel er ein Jahr lang in Bewusstlosigkeit. Danach erwarten ihn noch weitere Strafen und er war auf neun Jahre von den Versammlungen, also auch von Nektar und Ambrosia ausgeschlossen.
In der Argonautensage griff Iris schlichtend in den Kampf zwischen ihren Schwestern, den Harpyien, und den beiden Argonauten Kalais und Zetes, Söhnen des Nordwindes Boreas, ein: von Zeus als Strafe gesendet, raubten die Harpyien dem blinden Seher Phineus die Speisen. Die Boreaden kamen zu seiner Verteidigung. Nachdem Iris die Boreaden zur Vernunft gerufen und auf die Wasser des Styx geschworen hatte, dass die Harpyien Phineus fortan in Ruhe lassen würden, ließen Verfolger und Verfolgte über den Strophaden („Inseln der Wende“) voneinander ab. Gelegentlich werden Iris und Zephyros als Eltern von Eros (Gott des Sichverliebens) und Pothos (Gott des Liebesverlangens) genannt.

So yes, I picked up the LLCOOLCLUB SHIRTS from MONKEY DRIVE ,
and took the 15h train to berlin. Arrived rigth in time for VICE DINNER, got some crabs and then went to get KLEVER and YEAHFOOL + JBOUNCE . 21.00H started sound check . Then after soundcheck was made and some shirts and other promos were exchanged, we went back to VICE DINNER we're we met met TANJA AND HUGO
as they we're leavin' . . . a lot of other berlin CITY members invited to crayfish dinner , have arrived but crayfish then was out !! ALL GONE !! OVER ! ;( So we had to get food at the STEAK HOUSEright next to alexanderplatz. then back to the venue .
**** A HUGE NIGHT ( WILL BE FEAUTURED ASA PHOTOS ARRIVED ) **** till seven in the mornig , we stayed in the villa , WHAT A BLAST !!! ALL I CAN REMEMEBR THAT BEEING STRAIGHT EDGE LASTED TILL arround 7.30 sat morning until we went to WATERGATE where other scenarios took place . . . .. .

during pinkpony 4 we realized

not only cause we had worldchampion RAFIK

warmin' up for KLEVER, KAZEY and KIDFRESH

suddenly the vibe took over from the dancefloor

after pinkpony is dead we never really thought of repeatin it .;)

Great party theme killed at high succeess, COOL. NEXT THING! a lot of events where foundet since then, club exchanges takin place and blogs themes featured, but 4 now i think it is time to come up with a long term project, every two month . First Night (cologne/wekstatt and mtw/offenbach) will be VICE LIVE tour , next will be BRIGHTTRADESHOWSPECIAL (offenbach/mtw & robertjohnson), then we will continue every two month till may 2009 shirts available now
